JOB TITLE: Staff Nurse LEVEL: 4 DEPARTMENT: Nursing   PROFESSIONALLY ACCOUNTABLE TO: Departmental Senior Nurse Manager   JOB SUMMARY  The Registered Nurse provides high quality nursing by assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating care.  They are responsible and accountable for their own practice within the clinical area and for delivering a quality service at all times.  They are expected to participate in implementing and evaluating change using current research, audit and experience  They work effectively within the multidisciplinary team; supervising junior staff and deputising for the senior staff nurses or sisters when necessary.  They help to deliver services within the agreed departmental budget without compromising patient safety.  They promote their department and work in partnership with others within London Bridge Hospital and HCA.  Principal Responsibilities  Leadership/Management 1. To promote good communication channels amongst staff to enhance effective team work 2. To liaise in a professional manner with internal and external customers. 3. To maintain the patient environment to a high standard to ensure safety at all times. 4. To appreciate and be sensitive to patients physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural requirements. 5. To report incidents and complaints in a timely manner to allow thorough investigation and response. 6. To deputise for senior staff in their absence, demonstrating leadership potential. 7. To be aware of all corporate and hospital policies and be familiar with relevant departmental policies to ensure compliance. 8. To have an understanding of the Clinical Governance process and comply with the Infection Control and H&S policies and procedures to minimise risk to patients and staff. 9. To ensure good revenue recapture by recording patient charges.  Clinical 1. To demonstrate excellent clinical practice at all times and to be professionally accountable for own practice in accordance with NMC guidelines.  2. To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet the needs of patients and their family/carers following discussion with them. 3. To fully document all aspects of patient care accurately and in a timely manner, in line with NMC and HCA guidelines. 4. To be able to recognise clinical problems promptly and report or take appropriate action.  5. To respect and ensure patients dignity and privacy at all times. 6. To be vigilant about patient confidentiality; ensuring that exchange of information takes place safely. 7. To manage a patient caseload effectively by prioritising care and using time and resources efficiently. 8. To be able to accommodate and deal effectively with unplanned admissions under supervision and with support. 9. To participate in Consultant ward rounds and assist medical staff with clinical procedures. 10. To liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimum care is delivered to the patient. 11. To carry out nursing duties as requested by senior staff. 12. To be competent in the use of all equipment in the clinical area, perform daily checks on and subsequently report any faulty equipment. 13. To ensure that adequate levels of stock consumables and drugs are maintained and report deficits appropriately. 14. To participate in auditing clinical practice within the department and changing practice where appropriate.  Practice Development and Education 1. To participate in the development and promotion of evidence based practice within the clinical area through quality initiatives from various nurse led forums. 2. To keep up to date with current best practice within own clinical area. 3. To supervise and direct junior staff by promoting a learning environment and acting as a role model. 4. To ensure that own mandatory training days are attended on an annual basis. 5. To recognise own limitations and request assistance as necessary.  6. To provide patients and families with information regarding care and management of their conditions.  Knowledge and Understanding In order to perform this role the post holder will need a minimum of: First level registration at Diploma or Degree level A minimum of 6 months post registration experience Be assessed as competent in the relevant clinical competencies Be working towards a Teaching and Assessing qualification or Be working towards a Mentorship qualification Be working towards or obtained a specialist clinical qualification  Skills and effort In addition to the knowledge and understanding the post holder will require the following skills to perform the role to the standard required: Good organisational skills with the ability to flexibly respond to the needs of the department The ability to manage the clinical area, under supervision, on a day to day basis The ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team Good interpersonal skills, including communication (verbal, non verbal and written) positive mental attitude and sensitivity  A professional manner at all times Dexterity Computer skills Commitment to Continual Professional Development Commitment to Clinical Governance and Quality initiatives   Clinical Skills experience in these skills would be an advantage IV drug administration Phlebotomy  IV cannulation CVAD access competencies Syringe driver competencies Cytotoxic drug administration   The above job description is not exhaustive and the post holder may from time to time be asked to carry out other duties by the CNO and his/her deputies.
