Chief Architect (Head Office)

The Role
Effective Leadership of the day-to-day activities of the Architectural Department, including the following major roles:
• Supervision of the teams responsible for development of architectural designs for major building projects, including residential, commercial, corporate, recreational, educational, healthcare and mixed-use developments, from initial concept and preliminary design to final design and tender documentation level.
• Resource planning, distribution and monitoring of a multi-national and mixed gender team of 45 Architectural, interior design, landscape and urban planning staff ranging in seniority from Senior professionals to CAD/Revit technicians.

Reporting to the Head of the Architectural Department, other responsibilities will include:
• Supervising the activities of design teams to ensure the proper interpretation of project briefs and client requirements, technical development of designs and subsequent preparation of construction documentation.
• Ensuring that the Architectural design is properly coordinated with the requirements of other design disciplines.
• Presentation of Architectural designs to appropriate regulatory and client authorities for approval during all stages of the design process.
• Ensuing the completeness and quality of the output of architectural design teams.
• Reporting to Project managers, interpreting the global needs of a project and translating those into resource requirements, schedules and deliverables that allow fee budgets and schedules to be met.
• Ensuring that technical output meets current and relevant building codes and standards.
• Assisting in the general management of the Architectural Department including ongoing implementation of BIM and Revit capabilities.
• Supervision of staff development including continuing education development and training in new software and LEED education programs.
• Monitoring of productivity and discipline within the studio environment and resolution of issues, if necessary with the support of the Head of department.
Requirements
Suitable candidates will have a Bachelors degree in architecture accredited by a Western Architectural Professional Body (e.g. RIBA, AIA, RAIC) and a minimum of 15 years professional experience since graduation, some of which would preferably have been gained in the Middle East.

A thorough knowledge of all aspects of the building design and construction process, including in-depth knowledge of architectural construction materials and their application, as well as considerable experience in the production of design documentation, including drawings and details, schedules and specifications is essential.

The ability to effectively communicate ideas to other team members, as well as an understanding of the engineering requirements of projects and the coordination of these into the architectural design, are essential aspects of the position. Candidates must be conversant with international codes and standards for building design and be familiar with quality assurance/quality control procedures applicable to a design office.

Well-founded confidence, self-motivation, a flexible approach and the ability to work within, and recognize the cultural sensitivities in motivating a multi-cultural team are all qualities important to making a success of the position. The Role
Purpose: To successfully lead and supervise all the various activities required to deliver both the main Contract from Initiation to Closeout.

- Demonstrates strong ability for maintaining KPI’s on timely management of changes/variations, RFIs, document reviews and invoicing receivables, etc., as per contract and company’s requirements.
- Demonstrates strong ability ensuring that the project construction, methodology, planning, inspection, testing and record documents submitted by Contractors are reviewed and endorsed/rejected in accordance with project Codes, Standards and client specifications.

PURPOSE: To advice and assist the Resident Engineer (R.E.) in supervising on site construction activities to ensure quality assurance and quality control from start to completion of the construction project.

DETAILED ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC
- Assist the Project RE & ARE and top management in formulating plans to guide the architectural tasks in the respective project

OPERATIONAL
- Conduct supervision responsibilities in adherence to guidelines as indicated in the client’s Supervision Manual; ensure that supervision guidelines are being adhered to by site architects at all times
- Review and assess contractors’ and sub contractors’ pre-qualifications, inspect their showrooms, workshop/factory as and when required
- Make recommendations to the Resident Engineer regarding the selection and approval of sub-contractors in coordination with and through consultations with owner/client representatives
- Review and understand all project contract documents (drawings, shop drawings, composite coordinate service shop drawings, specifications, contract documents etc.); coordinate with other site architects and engineers before construction activities commence
- Notify the Resident Engineer of any discrepancies identified against contract documents in order for corrective action to be taken
- Assist in resolving any issues raised by contractors (e.g. requirements for time extensions, change order requests, variations etc); make recommendations to the Resident Engineer as appropriate
- Review related items within the contractor’s construction schedule (CCS) in coordination with the Planning Engineer (e.g. shop drawing submittal log, procurement schedule, and material submittal log etc.) prior to its approval by the Resident Engineer
- Review related construction materials, technical data and material and finishes samples submitted by contractors; ensure compliance against ministerial requirements and technical specifications.
- Attend various off site inspections including out of country inspection for review of specific material/samples, mock-ups, testing, etc. as per the contract document
- Inspect related procured construction materials delivered to the site, to ensure compliance against ministerial requirements and specifications/contract documents/approvals
- Ensure that all materials delivered on site are being adequately stored and protected as per manufacturer’s recommendations in order to avoid damage of materials
- Ensure that related works non compliance to the CCS is communicated to the Resident Engineer on a timely basis in order to avoid any delays in construction
- Ensure the maintaining of onsite quality control (e.g. through thorough testing of materials and verifying of materials, adequate storage of materials, contractor’s submittal of written undertakings, warranty and protection of installed systems etc.)
- Review "mock ups" and "progress work" against contract documents; make commentaries and recommendations to the Resident Engineer as required
- Contribute to managing the health and safety of all on-site personnel; report any observed safety violations to the Resident Engineer and/or Safety Inspector (if available)
- Attend meetings (e.g. progress meetings, coordination and specially called meetings with clients etc.) as and when required.
- Lead in resolving design and technical coordination issues with Finishes, Structure, Electro-mechanical, landscape, etc. on the project.
- Approve Minutes of Meetings prepared by the Contract Administrator for comments made by self
- Participate in preparing progress reports and in verifying costs related matters in order to finalize monthly payment certificates
- Ensure that the contractors submittals to local ministries are carried out in a timely manner as specified in contract documents
- Lead the snagging procedure after substantial completion of construction activities have ended; ensure that a snag list is prepared based on defective/outstanding works for the contractor to rectify, repair and complete for re-inspection.
- Review related as-built drawings provided by contractors prior to their submittal to local ministries for approval and for final construction record purposes

The job holder may be required to undertake additional duties, which may be reasonably expected and form part of the function of the job.

PEOPLE MANAGEMENT
- Lead a team of site senior / architects; assign roles and responsibilities to Site Architects
- Assist in the training of new joiners/interns

Requirements
- Bachelors Degree in Architecture - From an accredited educational institution
- Masters Degree in Architecture is preferred

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- 10-16 years and as an Architect, 5-7 of which should be as a Senior Site Architect, and 2-4 years as Lead Architect.
